Developing a Device for Automated Peritoneal Dialysis
Authors
Abstract:
Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an efficient alternative for hemodialysis. Removal of waste metabolites and excess water from the blood circulation are the two main tasks done during dialysis. These are done by using a filter; in PD, the naturally semi-permeable peritoneal membrane acts as the filter. Automated PD machines control intelligently the operations to enhance the efficiency and survival of patients. Available PD devices, however, have several limitations. Objective: To develop a novel portable automated PD device to be worn by patients. Methods: The developed device has a peristaltic pump to produce a steady dialysate flow, two flowmeters to measure the volume of dialysate, and a servomotor-actuated triway valve to conduct the dialysate to the right path. Moreover, to disinfect the permanent tubes inside the device an external steam sterilizer was designed. Electrical power of the device is supplied by rechargeable batteries. Results: Tests of a 16×12.5×6 cm3 device revealed that the three phases of dialysis, i.e., injection, dwelling, and drainage, were efficiently performed, and the alarms acted properly. Conclusion: This newly designed automated PD can surmount the social isolation dilemmas of either children or adults, and notably improve their life quality.

Adapted automated peritoneal dialysis.
Conventional automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) is prescribed as a repetition of the same dwell time and the same fill volume delivered by the cycler during the dialysis session. Nevertheless, it is well recognized that a cycle with a short dwell time and a small fill volume favors ultrafiltration (UF), while a cycle with a long dwell time and a large fill volume favors uremic toxin removal. full textEffectiveness of Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Compared to Outpatient Procedure: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Study
Introduction: The growing trend of renal failure has focused clinical therapy on the cost-effective alternatives such as peritoneal dialysis. Therefore, the present study has investigated the effectiveness of two methods of continuous and automatic peritoneal dialysis in the patients with end stage renal disease. Methods: This study was conducted in the form of a systematic review. Advanced se...

BACKGROUND A prospective sequential study on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and three techniques of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) was conducted to assess peritoneal clearances, the influence of peritoneal permeability on nocturnal APD clearances and the suitability of the peritoneal equilibration test (PET) for predicting clearances on APD. METHODS After performing a P...
full textTidal automated peritoneal dialysis preserves residual renal function better than non tidal automated peritoneal dialysis.
Residual renal function (RRF) is a key element for good maintenance of patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Several reports have been published comparing RRF preservation between continuous ambulatory PD and automated PD (APD); however, no comparisons have yet been made between tidal and non tidal APD. We therefore retrospectively analyzed RRF in patients on tidal (n = 10) and non tidal (n = 1...

full textSelection of patients for automated peritoneal dialysis versus continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis
GUIDELINES a. Patients receiving automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) treatment report significantly more time for work, family and social activities (Level II evidence; single good quality RCT, clinically relevant outcome, strong precise effect). APD should be prescribed in preference to continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for patients in whom minimising the time spent performing p...
